Open a cupboard by taking hold of the handle, turning and pulling. If there is something you can grab, the hand will open click and hold to grab and then complete the action as you would in real life. It points the way with a debonair flourish, but it's not just a theatrical prop. Unlike any other game, this hand is almost alive. Like any point and click game, the cursor/hand is your way to explore the world. It was almost eerie at first, this limb floating in the middle of the screen, but its strengths are still to be revealed. It's a hand, one of the most lifelike I have seen. The first thing you will likely notice, once you stop gawking at the passing landscape and pay attention, is the game cursor. It will suffice to say it involves his troublesome sons, Sirrus and Achenar. She has come to collect you, as you have been asked by Atrus to come to Tomahna to undertake a certain task. You literally burst into the game aboard a cable car, piloted by Yeesha, the 10 year old daughter of Atrus and Catherine.

However, Myst proved to be appealing enough that users were willing to upgrade their hardware to play the game. At a time when floppy disks were the standard, this was considered a risky move. This made Myst one of the first computer video games to be released only on CD-ROM. Due to the technical requirements of the game, it could not be released on floppy disk. Developers at Cyan created a highly detailed world that could be explored from every angle. The use of QuickTime video helped create a visually realistic world.įor the time period, Myst was visually remarkable. Rather than animating characters, the developers filmed mini-movies with real actors which would be activated when triggered by the player. Each of these characters appears trapped inside magical books and they provided insight into the game's lore. Aside from the player, the game contains only three characters: brothers Sirrus and Achenar, and their father Atrus. Myst stood apart from other adventure games by containing very little dialog. Scattered around the island are puzzles that the player must solve in order to return home.

Upon arriving on the island, little information is given on how to proceed and, instead, the player is given the freedom to explore the island however he wishes. In this point-and-click adventure game, players assume the role of a nameless and faceless character referred to as "The Stranger."
